Hello, everyone. My name is Angeliki Dedopoulou, and in this episode we will see how artificial intelligence is changing transport.

From helping cars, trains, ships and airplanes to function autonomously to making traffic flow smoother, artificial intelligence is making lives easier and making different modes of transport safer, cleaner, smarter and more efficient.

According to research, the global AI transportation market was worth 4 billion dollars in 2017 and is projected to reach 3.5 billion by 2023. The European Union is adopting rules to support technologies that enable the application of AI in transport, including rules for harmonised digital reporting for ships meant to simplify information exchange procedures between the ship and port, and rules on electronic freight transport information aimed at digitalising close port and transport operations.

In addition to this, the European Union has been financially supporting projects through the Horizon 2020 research innovation programme that explores the application of AI in the transport sector. While the most spectacular applications are widely known to the public (self-driving cars, autonomous air taxis, smart trucks, smart highways to name a few), AI-powered technologies are going to be deployed in many ways, many of them less eye-catching but extremely useful nonetheless.

AI-powered systems in cars provide functions such as vehicle status and location monitoring, driver drowsiness detection, real-time route planning and robot assistance, powering intelligent transformation from products to services and making life smarter, and this is just the beginning. We are only scratching the surface of AI-enabled transport. It is time to look forward, to adopt smarter means of transport and to allow our lives to be assisted by artificial intelligence.
