Mark Smitham

Mark Smitham leads government relations in Europe with a strong focus on security and trustworthiness. He is senior trusted advisor on security and privacy policy to Huawei’s Chief Representative to the EU Institutions. He has over 15 years of experience focused on security and trustworthiness of open source services and technologies such as 5G, cloud, IoT, and artificial intelligence. Mr Smitham works with EU policymakers and technology experts on a range of privacy protection and cyber security issues. For example, security strategy and policy, risk management, information assurance, and critical infrastructure protection. 

Before joining Huawei, he worked in EU government affairs at Microsoft. He has led cyber security policy and guidance for cloud computing services at the national level in the UK Government and at the European level in the European Commission, where he worked on the Directive on Security of Network and Information Systems (NIS) and actions to extend access and build trust as set out in the European Commission Communication on the European Cloud Initiative. 

While at the UK Government, Mr Smitham led cloud security public policy and managed large digital transformation projects and delivered complex digital services in very high-profile and secure environments. 

He holds an M.Sc. in Information Technology from the University of the West of Scotland, as well as an M.A. from the University of Glasgow.
