Huawei is 5th top R&D investor worldwide - EC confirms

(Brussels, 7 January 2020) – Huawei ranks fifth on the 2019 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard, as the fifth biggest investor in research and development worldwide.

The 2019 Scoreboard shows Huawei kept pace in the 2018-2019 fiscal year. The Scoreboard is made up of the 2 500 companies investing the largest sums in R&D in the world, the data being collected from companies’ annual reports and accounts.

“We welcome the European Commission’s balanced view on R&D Investment. Huawei is committed to a strong and united Europe. This year, we are celebrating 20 years of presence in Europe. Huawei is a natural partner for Europe to attain digital sovereignty”, said Abraham Liu, Huawei’s Chief Representative to the EU Institutions.

Greater R&D effort needed by EU-based companies

This at a time when the European Commission is calling for a greater effort by companies based in the EU to help Europe compete in the technological leadership stakes.

“Huawei has a very strong base in Europe, after 20 years of continuous investment here. We are always willing to share our research results and to transfer our technology to Europe. We have a very big commitment to R&D and Innovation, as evidenced by the 23 R&D centres we operate in 12 European countries,” added Mr Liu.

Huawei is among the companies leading the way in accomplishing EU targets for the Digital Society by building fast and reliable networks with all major European operators and investing heavily in R&D.

In Europe, the company employs 2 400 people in R&D, with specialists working in cutting-edge fields such as wireless and optical technology, cloud computing and new materials. Huawei has over 10,000 patents registered at the European Patent Office.
