Beyond 5G: new research initiative explores the future
Huawei is joining forces with research partners to explore the 6G horizon
Brussels, 1 September 2020
The new Joint Beyond 5G Research Initiative (JB5GRI) will explore future communications with a novel participative approach that could make every user an active contributor to the system.
The initiative, looking beyond 5G and towards 6G – the next generation standard – will cover technologies including satellite communications, end-to-end cybersecurity, innovative devices, cloud and artificial intelligence (AI).
It will develop vertical services in areas including automotive and augmented reality for ultra-high data rates.
This global initiative, involving world-class research partners across Europe and the rest of the world, will give a boost to connectivity research across the EU.
“Europe needs to get a head start in developing the next-generation standard for future connectivity. As 5G is becoming a part of our everyday reality, we need to look further towards the future to stay ahead of the curve. Huawei is among the initiators of this future-oriented research project to make this happen,” said Abraham Liu, Huawei’s Chief Representative to the EU Institutions.
To position Europe in a leading role for worldwide harmonisation of communications standards, the JB5GRI initiative has already teamed up with global partners to submit a project proposal for “Knowledge- and Artificial Intelligence-based smart networks for Reliable mobile cOmmunicationS” (KAIROS).
The project, which aims to drive the development of integrated services beyond 5G, has been submitted for the call “Smart Connectivity beyond 5G”, which is part of the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme.
