Europe-Africa cooperation in research and science

On 29 September 2020, the EU approved Horizon Europe, its most ambitious research and innovation framework programme yet. Running from 2021 to 2027, the programme will also be open to participation from African scientists and researchers from the public and private sectors.

International collaboration in the field of research and science is crucial for bringing innovative products into the marketplace while also helping to stimulate economic development and driving progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Covid-19 has further highlighted the importance of EU-Africa cooperation across a range of thematic areas.

This webinar, organised by The Brussels Times with the support of Huawei, discussed how we can increase African participation in Horizon Europe while strengthening the EU-African partnership in the field of research and innovation.

Abraham Liu, Huawei's Chief Representative to the EU Institutions, joined the debate to share his personal experience and outline how Huawei contributes to the EU-Africa partnership for science and innovation. Other participants included

• Daan de Toit, Deputy Director General, International Department for Science and Research, South African Government
