Huawei is a company with a strong focus on R&D. Around 45 % of Huawei's global workforce is devoted to research and innovation. In Europe, it runs 18 R&D sites. It is a world leader in patents: in 2015, Huawei remained the top patent applicant for the second year in a row with 3898 applications, according to statistics of the World Intellectual Property Organization.
Huawei also helps to develop international standards, which play a central role in the deployment of innovative products, and contributes to their formulation.

Europe’s ICT ecosystem offers a fertile environment for investors, boasting a high level of expertise in a number of strategic areas as well as providing a wealth of opportunities for collaboration with universities, research institutes and other industry players.
Huawei recognised the potential of this pool of expertise early on. Moving part of its global value chain to Europe has enabled the company to integrate European resources into its products and services. For Europe, this has meant a boost to smart growth. Huawei already invested over US$ 230 million in its European R&D activities.
